Jason Sloan

I was brought up on a crazy combination of the Spice Girls and Bruce Springsteen... 17 years later, I've shed my Spice Girls roots and grown to love pretty much everything musical under the sun. I got into punk rock when I was 9 and my mom watched Green Day perform "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" on the Grammy's. When I was 12 my mom bought me a book called "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die," and as she puts it, "the monster was born." I got into rap in middle school hearing Eminem's "Lose Yourself," and I got into EDM this year when I head the Albin Myers remix of Avicii's "Fade Into Darkness." I try and go to concerts when I have sufficient time and funds, some of my favorites having been Rise Against and Springsteen (who I've seen three times each). Hope you all enjoy my music as much as I do.

Philly-based pop-punk band The Wonder Years released their second single off of their upcoming album The Greatest Generation, set to release May 14th. “Dismantling Summer” keeps all of the classic elements of their older material. Girls – Kid Cudi feat. Too $hort

Despite being a second semester senior, I am up at around midnight with mountains of homework that for some reason I intend to do. But the gods are smiling down on me tonight because that kid from Cleveland hit us with a new song. “Girls” features the same otherworldly production we’ve come to expect from…

Drake – “5am in Toronto”

I must confess I wasn’t really feeling “Started From The Bottom.” I mean, the guy who brought us Take Care is capable of so much more than just another song about making it from nothing. I’ve been worrying about his upcoming album and if it was all just going to sound like its first single, but…

Kid Cudi – “Immortal”

Kid Cudi took to Twitter yesterday to say that he couldn’t wait until April for his fans to hear his new music, promising to drop something on Friday. Well, he dropped the much anticipated track “Immortal,” whose release date was originally in November, but it ended up being pushed back. It was totally worth the…

Grouplove – “Everyone’s Gonna Get High

I don’t know how many of this site’s devoted followers are also fans of HBO’s new(ish) series Girls, but you should all be fans of the series’ fantastic soundtrack. The clear highlight is this new effort from Grouplove, an indie band who rose to stardom with the single “Tongue Tied.” If you haven’t heard their debut,…

Devvon Terrell – “Don’t You Worry Child (Sandy Hook School Tribute)”

One month ago yesterday, twenty-seven people were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. Regardless of our closeness to the victims, or our distance from them, the deaths of children affect everyone who hears about them. One of the reasons I love music the most is because of the way it reacts to the world around it.

I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed and I found this video. Underground RnB singer Devvon Terrell recorded a cover of Swedish House Mafia’s anthem “Don’t You Worry Child” as a tribute to the twenty children murdered. He begins with a downtempo, vocoder-piano cover of John Martin’s vocals, before exploding into the progressive synths that made the original famous. Footage of smiling children undercuts shots of Devvon playing the piano. Please check out the video above.

The Airborne Toxic Event – “Timeless”

The Airborne Toxic Event revealed on their website yesterday that they would be releasing their third studio album, entitled Such Hot Blood, later this spring. They also debuted their first single, “Timeless,” on Sirius AltNation, and now it is up for streaming on the Billboard website. As with all of their songs, “Timeless” contains intensely personal lyrics about love, life, and death written from lead singer Mikel Jollett’s life experiences. This song in particular deals with him finding his grandmother’s body in her room, and how sometimes life surprises him. However, he managed to turn his sadness into an anthemic charged single about love conquering all of the twists and turns life can throw at him.

Hook N Sling & NERVO – “Reason (Vicetone Remix)”

Vicetone is starting the new year off with a bang, folks. The EDM duo hopped on several great tracks last year, including Zedd’s “Clarity” and Youngblood Hawke’s “We Come Running.” Well, it hasn’t even been 10 days into 2013 and these guys are back at it with a killer remix of Hook N Sling &…

Indie Bands You Should Know: Kevin Devine

Technically, Kevin Devine is not an indie band so much as a singer-songwriter. You’re all gonna have to forgive me though, seeing as the segment is called “Indie Bands You Should Know.” I first heard of Kevin Devine as a member of Bad Books, an indie supergroup that he is a member of along with…
