A couple of years ago, before My Chemical Romance recorded and released Danger Days, there was an entire album that they recorded and threw away. If your as big of a fanatic for this band as I am, knowing that they had an entire album they chose not to release would have killed you inside. Back in September however, the band announced the release of Conventional Weapons: 10 songs from those unreleased sessions, set to be released as 2 songs a month for 5 months.
“They hung out on my iPod and every few months I would visit them and think ‘…damn.’ At first they gave me mixed feelings…I liked the songs but I couldn’t help associating them with the hard times from which they were created. It made me a bit uneasy. But as time passed I began to enjoy them more and more, and was able to look upon the past a bit more fondly. They were my secret playlist, only for me. Like some unknown band that I discovered and loved, and that few others in the world had ever heard.”
Both songs are energetic, hard rocking, and dark; they sound like MCR from the golden (pre-Danger Days) days. With a Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge-sounding chorus and one of the heaviest breakdowns I’ve heard by the band, “Boy Division” might actually be my new favorite My Chem song. “Tomorrows Money” should not be ignored however, with its heavy bass line and guitar solo; both songs made me euphoric to hear the old My Chemical Romance back.
