Common- “Stay Schemin” & the Drake vs. Common Beef

Back in November, Common spit a line about “soft rappers” on his single ‘Sweet’ and after much speculation, confirmed that it was directed to Drake and other soft MCs.

“Some hoes ass n—as / Singing all around me man, la la la /You aint muthaf-cking Frank Sinatra / Uh, lil bitch”

On Friday, Rozay dropped his new mixtape that featured Drake on a track.  Drake fired back at Common in his verse on “Stay Schemin” and said:

“Don’t be duckin’ like you never wanted nothin’/ It’s feelin’ like rap changed it was a time it was rugged/ Back when if a n—a reached it was for the weapon/ Nowadays n—as reach just to sell their record,”

Common responded today by adding on a verse to the track ‘Stay Schemin’ and specifically targeting Drake on it.  Common rapped

“You Canada dry” to end off the verse and then spoke out saying, “Soft n—a, make no mistake, I’m talking to Drake.  It’s the remix. Rick Ross, Common, and that hoe ass n—a”

Common made the beef official by directly calling out Drake. In response also today, Drizzy’s main producer tweeted at Common, pushing this beef a little bit farther.

Personally, I think it’s ridiculous that Common is starting a beef with Drake. I’m a huge fan of them both, but it’s just wrong for someone who’s been in the game for a while like Common to go at a rookie like Drake. Because in the grand scheme of things, Drake is still a rookie; he just released his second album back in November of 2011. Common has 9 albums out, his first one being released in 1992 – Drake was only 6 years old at the time. Imagine if Eminem tried to start beef with Mac Miller…not a good look. I can’t imagine any reason why someone at the top would shoot down the new artists (unless, like Drake said, he’s just trying “to sell his record” and get his name on the map again.) “It bothers me when the gods get to acting like the broads.” We’ll see how this beef plays out. –Anthony

EDIT:  I 100% disagree with Anthony, considering how Common isn’t just trying “to sell his records”. I don’t know if the fellow YGM poster has checked out The Dreamer, The Believer, but Common is one of the most relevant rappers in the game right now and he doesn’t need beef with a soft ass rapper to get his name out there.  Like Ant said, Common has been around for 12 years, but this Canadian Drake is a little to cocky for my liking considering how he has only dropped two full length albums.  Common is not to be f*cked wit. It’s all love Anthony, but yo I’m doing it for the sake of G.O.O.D. Music hah- Raffi

EDIT: I cosign with what Raffi just said. Drake writes mainstream music and what only sells. Drake has thrown shots in the last year left and right. To The Throne, to Big Sean, Common and others. Why? Drake likes to keep the spot light on himself. I mean who actually believes Drake is as depressed as he sounded in Take Care. I do think that what Common did, 3 days after the Rick Ross’ mixtape is very ballsy. Drake probably going to say he’s too “Sweet” to respond. –Stavros

EDIT: I’m siding with Anthony on this one. No disrespect, I guess, to either Common or Drake, but these are obviously two of the softest rappers in the game, and this beef is kind of ridiculous. Not taking away from Common’s legacy, because he’s obviously a legend, but he’s not one to call anyone soft or “sweet”. Wasn’t he just in Happy Feet Two? He’s obviously playing a pawn to the Kanye/Hov vs. Young Money beef, and Drake has fired the better shots so far. All Drake’s doing is defending himself anyway, because Common went in first. He could do a lot better. –Matt

EDIT: Noah Shebib used the wrong ‘weather’. It’s whether. That is all. – Justin
