Guest Review: Eli Young Band at Emory University

In my short time at Emory University in Georgia, I have seen a diverse group of musical acts. Macklemore, Cazzette, Slightly Stoopid, and Hoodie Allen have all made stops either on, or near campus. However, no one act has been quite as good live as The Eli Young Band, a country group based out of Denton, Texas was on Monday night. Stopping by on their way to Nashville for the CMAs, they played to a crowd of hundreds of students on Emory’s McDonough Field.
In the days prior to the event, there were rumors around campus that country music was not popular enough among students to make this concert a hit. Mockingbird Son, a group from Nashville, opened the show and were very well received. The Eli Young Band then made their presence known very quickly, as many fraternities and country music fans showed their support and love for the band. After seeing groups such as O.A.R , Dave Matthews Band, and The Zac Brown band live, I thought I had seen some great live acts. But Eli Young sounds exactly the same live as they do on their records. They absolutely blow away their competition when it comes to country, and even southern rock music. The concert ended with an encore of the band’s two greatest hits, “Even if it Breaks Your Heart” and “Crazy Girl” and by this point the crowd could be heard singing the lyrics from miles away.
The band is nominated for two CMAs, Vocal Group of the Year and Song of the Year for the aforementioned “Even if it Breaks Your Heart”. If nothing else, the concert serves as a reminder that I do in fact go to school in the south (it can sometimes be hard to tell). It was nice to see Emory finally embrace its location with a Country music concert.

Milly Badison
Milly Badison, the duo of Patrick McKelvy (of Potomac Boys Club) and Matt Kane, tour the country’s universities with 40k worth of lights. They put on a hell of a show here at Vanderbilt a few weeks back and for what they bring to the table, they were more than worth their price for booking. Check them out, because these dudes know how to rage. Oh, also, shout out to our own Callie Rushton on her appearance in the video.

Mac Miller- You Like to Party? (Nimbus Remix)
Nimbus, a native of Denver, Colorado started off in high school producing hip hop beats for a group called Nimbus & Stratus, which has since split up as they went to different colleges. Now Nimbus is tearing up Vanderbilt doing his own thing and producing remixes of a variety of pop songs. Besides hip-hop, he’s experimenting with different styles and genres including house and dubstep. In this track, Nimbus lays Mac Miller’s verses from “Pittsburgh Kidz Get The Biz” over his own beat, sampling the classic “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” Like Nimbus on facebook here.
Bonus: Nimbus also remixed “I Love College” recently and the remix gave the single life once again. The melodic horns and backing drums make up for a great beat.
Release: Dirty South & Alesso- “City of Dreams” (ft. Ruben Haze)

Alesso and Dirty South are unstoppable and let me tell you, this is a power move if I’ve ever seen one. These two big names have managed to bang out another anthem as summer comes to an end. The first time I heard this song, I was rolling face hard at EDC NYC – I still get the chills listening to it. The melodic guitar synths in the beginning reminded me a bit of Chris Lakes “Sundown”. HiveMusic describes this song perfectly, “The progressive build is seemingly non stop till it drops into a melodic masterpiece with true progressive anthem synths ever-present.” Also, where the hell did Ruben Haze come from? These vocals are flawless and exceptionally uplifting/emotional. Expect this to infect the airwaves at every festival you go to here on out.
Ignition – Wahmaze

Wahmaze is coming out with his new track “Ignition” to help fight AIDS and damn, he’s shown us all that he’s grown as a producer. About a month ago, 3LAU released “Back To New” and had all the proceeds go to Pencils of Promise, an organization that focused on building schools in developing countries. Wahmaze has decided that he wants to do the same but for FACEAIDS, a charity which provide socioeconomic help to those affected with HIV/AIDS. ALL proceeds are going to this organization, so on June 28, go buy “Ignition” on iTunes! Like Jamie’s page on FaceBook and follow him as he starts to do big things!
